The film centers around the struggles of a young woman operating in a predominantly male environment, and the mind games played at the poker table. SYNOPSIS: Mala, once a poker champion now turned addiction therapist, tries to help herself by helping people like her—people who can’t live without the thrill of bets, cards, dice, and the like. Mala has worked tirelessly to claw her way into a new and she’s managed to carve out a rather tight, but livable space for herself in the world. Mala no longer lives the rush of high stakes poker, but she applies her game-like mind to reading and manipulating people, primarily the men who keep lining up to take her on dates. Mala’s make shift peace gets tossed aside when her brother, Ryan, gets out of prison and comes to see her. He’s quick to remind Mala that she played a large part in his ending up in jail, and uses that leverage to stay with her while he gets back on his feet. It isn’t long before Ryan is back at the poker tables and deeply indebted to some very scary people. By the time Mala discovers this information, Ryan is in the wind, and the men seeking to collect his debts turn their sights on Mala. Now with her own life on the line, Mala is forced to return to the game of her past and put her own chips on the table. We strive for something greater in the game of life, and in that pursuit comes risk. Life is a gamble and seeking the reward—the glory of existence—is part of our human nature. HER CALL is inspired by my own life experiences, decisions, and those of the people who have been a part of my life. I have always been fascinated by the human psyche, our behaviors, and reactions to certain situations. This idea that life is a “gamble” puts us at the poker table every single day. We risk everything, selling our souls, for things we might not need. We push ourselves to the point of breaking, and for what? Through the character Mala, and her search for adrenaline and excitement, Her Call explores the question of what makes life worth living? When is simply existing not enough? What type of person pushes themself to the brink for their passion, and what happens when that person hits the bottom? In Mala’s game, there is no winner, and money isn’t a shortcut to happiness. She is coping with real emotional pain, and the spirit of competition—the game played at the poker table—is her release from that pain. For her, it’s not about winning money, it’s about playing the game and that is the source of her addiction. Mala’s story, the story of a hustler, a gambler, and a woman unpacks a complicated person in an effort to understand our human nature. This is a woman operating in a way that we aren’t accustomed to socially. She is different, and this leads us to a broader understanding of our place in the world, and the identity we choose as opposed to the one placed upon us. Through Mala, audiences will be immersed in an energetic but realistic world of gamblers, casinos, and poker tables. The film is moody and character driven to put the viewer inside Mala’s mind and place them right next to her at the table, as she engages in a high stakes emotional battle.
